The aim of the Queer Curtain – 30 years of democracy for LGBTI people project was to build a queer memory based on history research and testimonies from those LGBTI people who survived the communist and socialist era and who helped improve LGBTI people’s lives. LGBTI people lived in a secret underworld, hiding their identities in public life to avoid harm and discrimination by the state and the public. The project told the stories of people who suffered during the communist era in countries such as the former Czechoslovakia, now Slovakia and the Czech Republic and Hungary. Compared to the lives of LGBTI people today 30 years after the revolution, project describes how their lives and society have changed. What were the rights of LGBTI people during the dark history of communism.
The project included historical research on the basis of which was created a traveling and online exhibition Loading:love. Throughout testimonies of LGBTI survivors was prepared theatrical production Socialism with queer face and the stories of LGBTI people were presented through videos and articles. The project was organized by the NOMANTINELS Theatre (www.duhovyrok.sk, www.nomantinels.sk) and the partners of Post Bellum, o.p.s. (https://www.postbellum.cz) from the Czech Republic and Háttér Society (http://en.hatter.hu) from Hungary.
